Entrambi fuori concorso. La kermesse diretta da Dieter Kosslick definisce il programma della selezione ufficiale aggiungendo ai già annunciati Wong Kar Wai (The Grandmaster), Seidl (Paradise: Hope), Panahi (Closed Curtain), Dumont (Camille Claudel 1915), Soderbergh (Side Effects) e Van Sant (Promised Land) pure l'ultimo film con River Phoenix (Dark Blood di George Sluizer, fuori concorso). Nota dolente: nella selezione ufficiale non ci sono film italiani (eppure Educazione siberiana di Salvatores era dato tra i papabili). Per il resto, il programma stilato dalla Berlinale è globale: Austria, Belgio, Bosnia Erzegovina, Canada, Cile, Germania, Francia, Grecia, Hong Kong/Cina, Iran, Kazakistan, Olanda, Polonia, Portogallo, Corea del Sud, Romania, Russia, Slovenia, Spagna, Sud Africa, Svizzera e, ovviamente, Stati Uniti.
