“Se il Concorso offre un'immagine del cinema così com'è e come sarà, possiamo dire che lo sconvolgimento provocato dagli eventi del 2020 ha portato i registi a sfruttare al meglio questa situazione e creare film profondamente personali. Questo concorso è meno ricco di numeri ma molto denso di contenuti e stile ”, commenta il direttore artistico Carlo Chatrian sulla selezione.
Dei film invitati, la maggior parte proviene da artisti che sono già stati al festival. La gamma di argomenti è tipicamente molto ampia e affronta argomenti direttamente rilevanti. Ancora più importante, ogni film mette in dubbio la forma per cui sceglie: kammerspiel, documentario, fiction, racconti morali, adattamenti di libri, fantascienza, coming of age, satira, film d'epoca, fiaba...
In totale ci sono 15 film, due dei quali opere prime (come Next Door dell'attore Daniel Brühl), che gareggeranno per l'Orso d'Oro e gli Orsi d'Argento. Le produzioni di 16 paesi sono rappresentate nella competizione. Nessun italiano in gara. Il Festival si svolgerà online nella versione Industry Event dall'1 al 5 marzo. A giugno poi il Summer Event aperto al pubblico.
Annunciata anche la sezione Berlinale Special, dove figura il nostro Pietro Marcello con Per Lucio, documentario su Lucio Dalla.
