In pole position troviamo, con 5 nomination, Carol, seguito con 4 da The RevenantThe Big Short e Steve Jobs: essendo gli unici due di questi quattro a essere candidati sia quale film (entrambi drama) che per la regia, le opere di Todd Haynes e Alejandro Iñárritu sono da considerarsi favorite quasi alla pari, sebbene la doppietta film-regia riesca anche a Spotlight (3), Mad Max (2) e The Martian (3).

Tre nomination anche per Room, The Danish Girl, The Hateful Eight (una per il nostro Ennio Morricone). Nella categoria film straniero non entra Non essere cattivo di Claudio Caligari, l'Italia sorride, oltre che per Morricone, per la doppietta di Youth: Jane Fonda non protagonista e il pezzo Simple Song No. 3 di David Lang interpretato dal soprano Sumi Jo.
