Al Stephenson, Fred Derry e Homer Parish sono tre reduci di guerra. Come tanti altri, dopo anni trascorsi al fronte, lontano da casa, i tre fanno fatica a capire i cambiamenti avvenuti, a rapportarsi con le persone a cui vogliono bene ma che sono abituati a considerare lontane e a reinserirsi nell'universo lavorativo. Soltanto dopo un periodo di smarrimento riusciranno a trovare il loro posto e ad accettare se stessi.
