FRANCIA 1949

Ritornano in patria i francesi che erano stati prigionieri in Germania. Tornata da Dachau ridotta in uno stato miserevole, la zia Emma deve sopportare anche la cupidigia della sua famiglia. Antonio riprende il suo mestiere di barman ma le ausiliarie americane dimostrano un'eccessiva simpatia per lui e le autorità intervengono imponendo ad Antonio di limitare il proprio servizio alle ore diurne. In una modesta pensione, Jean ritrova un vecchio ufficiale tedesco della Gestapo, che era comandante del campo di concentramento e torturatore emerito. Costui è braccato dall apolizia ma è malato e in fin di vita. Jean nei suoi discorsi accusa il moribondo ch, però, muore prima che i poliziotti lo scoprano. Al suo ritorno in Francia René è accolto con la fanfara perché è il 1500mo prigioniero rimpatriato ma non trova più né sua moglie, che è fuggita con un amante, né la sua roba: il suo appartamento è occupato da uno della "resistenza" con una sorella vedova con tre figli. I suoi amici non si curano di lui: solo i suoi cani ammaestrati gli fanno festa ma hanno dimenticaro gli esercizi appresi. Ma poi troverà nella vedova coinquilina un affetto che lo riconcilierà con l'esistenza. Louis, giovane contadino, torna al suo paese portando con sè Elsa, una giovane tedesca che lo ama e che ha perduto tutti i suoi familiari. I paesani le sono ostili e la perseguitano tanto da portarla alla disperazione: presa dallo sconforto, Elsa cerca la morte gettandosi in uno stagno ma saranno i paesani stessi a salvarla. Comprendono finalmente che anche lei ha tanto sofferto: prevale il sentimento di umana fratellanza.

"Il film che racconta in cinque brevi storie il ritorno dei prigionieri di guerra e il loro difficile rinserimento nella vita normale mantiene un'unità stilistica sorprendente poichè è stato firmato da quattro diversi registi. Tutti bravi gli interpreti, specie Serge Reggiani, serio e convincente (Le retour de Louis), e Noel-Noel ironica e maliziosa (Le retour de René)."
