Clive Candy, un ufficiale inglese, ha combattuto durante il conflitto anglo-boero e durante la prima guerra mondiale si è distinto per il suo coraggio e per la sua condotta. È convinto che l'esercito inglese sia imbattibile e che basti seguire il codice d'onore per essere un degno combattente. È un uomo diverso dagli altri, pronto a qualsiasi cosa pur di smascherare il giornalista tedesco che scrive terribili fandonie sulle truppe inglesi. La sua amicizia con Theo, un ufficiale tedesco, nata nel 1902, riesce sopravvivere nonostante il secondo e terribile conflitto mondiale e l'amore per la stessa donna.
